Your wedding recording tool kit — What should be in it?

If you are looking to start your career as a wedding photographer or videographer, your first step will be choosing the correct tools. We are going to have a look at the Panasonic GH5s and the Zoom H6 to see if these are the toys that can help you get started — or keep going — on your wedding photography career. Weighing up each instrument’s pros and cons will help you to consider the decision carefully before you make the investment. By weighing up your specific needs against the features of each product, you will be able to see very quickly if they align with your intended purposes.

Superior recording instruments are not only important for professionals, but for anyone looking to capture a wedding in a way that does it justice. Perhaps your niece is getting married, and you want to ensure that you are able to hold onto the memories forever. Maybe your best friend is tying the knot, and you would like to keep a record of the event through your own eyes. Whatever your personal reason for wanting to effectively record a wedding, it is vital that your equipment is up for the job.

Let’s take a look at the Panasonic GH5s and its efficacy at recording Big Day visuals, and the Zoom H6 as a means of capturing the clanging of those bells.

Panasonic GH5s

When looking at the Panasonic GH5s, the first question that might have popped into your mind is, “What is the difference between this model and the Panasonic GH5?” The quickest answer you will be able to find on the question is the price. The GH5s is approximately $500 more expensive than the GH5, depending on which supplier you land up purchasing from.

Is this price difference warranted? What is it that makes this model worth a heftier price tag? Surely it can’t only be that little “s” hanging off the end of the model name. In Steve Dent’s thorough exploration of the benefits (and downsides) of the Panasonic GH5s, he argues that the Panasonic GH5s shoots “the best video of any mirrorless camera” out there. Wow. That’s quite a claim. It’s not difficult to see then why the price tag would be on the higher end of the spectrum. With its wider field of view, the GH5s prides itself on its ability to shoot superior video.

So what are the downsides? The first problem comes in when you are looking to shoot stills. The resolution is so low that you may be better off using your iPhone. If you are looking to use the Panasonic GH5s as a tool for stills photography, you may find yourself highly disappointed.

While the Panasonic GH5s shoots incredible video, it still may not be the best option when it comes to wedding videography. While it has a much wider field of view than the GH5, it lacks in-body stabilization. With the ever-changing needs of a wedding videographer, this lack may turn out to be your nemesis.

The bottom line is, while the Panasonic GH5s is an excellent product for shooting video for other purposes, it may not be best when it comes to the needs of a wedding photographer or videographer.

Zoom H6

What about the Zoom H6? You may already be aware of the importance of an exemplary sound recorder when it comes to capturing a wedding effectively. You may have learnt the hard way that you just can’t rely on inbuilt microphones. To adequately record sound at a wedding without requiring octopus-arms, you will also want something that is not to cumbersome.

The next question is whether the Zoom H6 is the right piece of equipment to get the job done. The answer to this is a definite yes. If you are looking to create professional sound with the least amount of additional work, in a way that is budget friendly, the Zoom H6 is the ideal instrument for you.

At the heart of the Zoom H6’s design is its versatility. It can record up to six tracks of 24 bit / 96kHz Broadcast WAV audio. It also has two -12db back up tracks.

The bottom line is that you do not have to spend a fortune to create excellent audio for a wedding video. The Zoom H6 could become your new best friend.

Spending time doing research on the tools you will need for your life as a wedding videographer — whether you are a professional or a one-time special-day capturer — will ultimately save you hours of frustration on the other end of the process. While the GH5s may not be the best option when it comes to event video capture, the Zoom H6 is an excellent tool for making sure that those wedding sounds last and last.
